10 degrees is generally the most acute angle to use. More acute angle does not leave enough steel behind the edge for support to prevent edge chips or rolling.

The angle of the blade from spine to edge is 4 degrees approx for the Mercator, Pioneer and Skoner and most other blades. So the handle sharpening angle is 10 + 4 = 14 degrees per side. You can use the handle 10 degrees as a guide and add more angle from this reference point.

This is the more accurate method using only one blade angle shift and can eyeball the the angle of blade and handle gap vs the old way of angle the blade at 45 then halving that to get 12.5 degrees the adjust that to preferred angle.

Apply autosol to the leather surface and let it dry before use. Have the tool in a plastic bag when bush. It is supplied with autosol on the leather. Autosol requires replacement eventually due to use. German Autosol is easily available in auto shops everywhere,

The edge is only as sharp as the fine grade of the grit sharpening it. So this uses fine compounds and autosol etc. So you get more polished edge and sharper for shaving sharp.

Leather is resilient and it provides a better profile for the abrasive grit because the grits don't protrude out like on an electroplated surface diamond stone and scour the metal surface, instead on resilient leather the grits are all at a more uniform height while stopping the edge creating the extra sharp mirror finish edge.

The extra feature of the resilient leather is that it refines a micro bevel which also reduces burrs and focuses the edge re-sharpening at the very edge which is mostly why stropping is popular.

It is a good idea to get one of our coarse stones and stick it onto a plywood handle and strop one edge side on that at the end for toothy edge. This is the best edge in the world. Shown in numerous comparisons tests recently to cut more and faster. Fine and coarse on opposing edges.
